Pitch card game online. We had a question about this Hexographer feature and thought a blog post describing it and screenshots would help. A “child map” (aka submap) is a map of a smaller region created from a map of a larger region. Perhaps you already have a world map and want to make a continent or country map. Or maybe you have the country/continent map and want a map of a single state or kingdom in the larger country/empire. Likewise, you could make a county/local map from a state/small kingdom map.

The process is easy with the Pro version of Hexographer. (Free Hexographer lets you do a lot of map creation and editing, but this is one of the “pro” features.)

Note: Worldographer: (aka Hexographer 2) replaces Hexographer. It has all the features of Hexographer, plus better shape editing, better configuration, upgraded UI, true child maps, world data ganeration, undo/redo, cut/copy/paste and much more. Before I go any further, thanks for the review! I develop it primarily on a Mac. So it does generally work on Macs. The best way to confirm it works for you is to try the “free version” on the website. Next Level Map-Making. Worldographer is the easy to use world, kingdom, city, village, dungeon, & battlemat map software for Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) and other role-playing games (RPGs).   1. Open/create your higher-level map.
  2. Save a copy before the changes.
  3. Go to the “Tools” menu and select “Make Child Map”.
  4. In the dialog, select how many hexes across you want each hex in the child map from the parent map. So if your parent map has hexes that are 30 miles across and you want 6 mile across hexes in the child map, choose “5”. You can choose values from 3 to 30.
  5. Save your new map as a new file.
  6. Edit the new map to add more detail. You can clearly see the parent hex shapes in how the child map’s hexes are laid out. Change some for variety. Move features (town, city, castle, etc. icons) as needed. By default, they are placed in the center subhex. Shapes & lines are moved to the proper locations in the child map. However, these too can be edited to add more detail.

You can get the program in any of several different ways. The software is written in Java, but we now native build it for Windows 7+ and Mac OSX 10.7+.

  • An .exe setup file for Windows that DOES NOT REQUIRE JAVA. Download this, unzip it and click to run it. We’re still testing this, so please send feedback to support at inkwellideas dot com. Powered By Excelsior JET.
  • A zipped .app file/folder for Mac OSX that also DOES NOT REQUIRE JAVA. In order to use it you do need to temporarily change your security settings to install/open unsigned apps, then reset the security setting.
  • A .jar file that you simply double-click to run. It will prompt you to ask for an amount of memory to use. You will need java installed first to run it.
  • A simple .jar file for expert users. You’ll want to start it with the command line “java -jar -Xmx2000M hexographer.jar” (You can replace the 2000M with higher amounts of memory.)
